Outsourcing: Nothing to fear but fear itself

Should we fear outsourcing or harness it? This Thursday, Lisle Technology Partners CEO Adarsh Arora steps to the podium at the Chicagoland Entrepreneurship Center to tell Chicago's emerging technology companies to capitalize on outsourcing.

"Adarsh has been a leader in elevating the discussion on the impact of outsourcing," says President David Weinstein, of the Entrepreneurship Center. "He woke many people to the realities, and helped frame the discussion for Chicago's emerging tech firms to embrace outsourcing."

'Don't blame outsourcing for job losses in US'

It is true that US manufacturing employment has been dropping for many years, but that is not primarily due to foreigners taking these jobs, he said, adding factory jobs are vanishing all over the world.

"Want to blame something? Blame new knowledge," said Reich(former Labour Secretary), who pointed out that job losses go well beyond the factory floor.

"When the US economy gets back on track, many routine jobs won't be returning, but new jobs will take their place. A quarter of the Americans now work in jobs that were not listed in the census bureau's occupation codes in 1967. You see only the loss of old jobs. You are overlooking all the new ones."

"Rather than fret about 'losing jobs' to others," said Reich, "we ought to be fretting about the growing number of our young people who are losing their footing in the emerging economy."

Don’t blame India; understand why outsourcing: US Congressman

Americans protesting outsourcing should understand why it is happening rather than blame India and other countries for it, a US Congressman said.

It would be “much better and a positive approach to shift the emphasis on not blaming India and other nations but to understand why it is taking place and what has gone into creating this situation,” said Congressman Joseph Crowley (Democrat), who hosted the first Indian American Policy Day on Wednesday.

Indian Americans consider the rising protest against outsourcing as an “India-bashing” exercise.

The great hollowing-out myth

An Economist article proposes that job growth in the U.S. will far outweigh losses to offshoring.

“The creation of new jobs always overwhelms the destruction of old jobs by a huge margin”

Don't blame India for job loss

Asking Britain's trade unions to show a sense of fairness towards India, British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has said that it was 'unfair' to blame India for loss of British jobs because of 'outsourcing' and India must be given a chance to develop its skills and markets.
